Obituary

On October 18, 1958, Constance Johnson was born into a loving, and still growing, family created by the union of Leonard and Mamie Johnson. She became the younger sister of Roger, Linda, Garey, and Pauline Johnson and before long, she would become the older sister of Darlene, Timothy, and Ishmael Johnson. Connie would eventually be known to her family as "Lil Alice May" and have a close relationship with her siblings, relationships she would hold dear her entire life.

Constance Johnson, whose journey started at St. Mary's Hospital in New York City, was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. She grew up in Brownsville with her family and cultivated lifelong relationships with members of her community. She attended elementary and middle schools in her local community and graduated with her high school diploma from South Shore High School. Throughout this time Constance felt more like a "Connie'', so as soon as she could, she changed her first name to Connie, the name we know her by today.

As a vivacious young adult, Connie would follow in her parents' footsteps of service and find joy in her work as a court reporter. She always found time to have a little fun and enjoyed dancing, bowling, and spending time with family. Connie was always surrounded by children and loved to babysit, even before becoming a mother. In 1978, at the age of 20, Connie would give birth to her first child, Fatima Sierre Johnson. As a new mother, Connie took pride in this role and for the next nine years, she worked tenaciously at her two jobs as a court reporter and keypunch operator to give her first born the best life she could. In 1987, Connie would give birth to her second child, Electa Phillipena Johnson. Finding the need to be more present with her children, Connie became a stay-at-home mom to her two beautiful and energetic girls. But her family was incomplete.

In 1993, Connie would give birth in her home to her first born son, Jayquan O'dell Johnson.  One year later, while strolling down Wall Street during the lunch hour, she, with her self-confident and tantalizing walk, caught the eye of a young man, Kenneth Waluyn aka "Kenny". They had actually met previously, in 1983, but lost contact with each other until this moment 10 years later.  Determined not to let Connie slip away again, Kenny hastily followed her to gain her attention and acquire those digits. But, Connie would only have it her way -- she took his number instead and making him sweat a little, she called him a week later. Once they connected, Kenneth became smitten for life and they became entwined forever and began their journey as parents to Fatima, Electa, and Jayquan.

Their love for each other became evident each day, and soon their family grew even bigger with the birth of their son, Bwerani Kendall Johnson in 1996. But their family was not yet complete, for Kenny and Connie would welcome their last born, Kendricks Lamar Johnson, in 1998. Connie, an independent and strong woman, finally decided to accept Kenny's proposal and they tied the knot on December 21, 1999.

Over the years Connie returned to a life of service and worked as an election coordinator for the NYC Board of Elections and volunteered at the Fresh Air Fund. Connie would share fond memories as a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Those who knew Connie knew she loved to cook fried chicken, ribs, and potato salad. She was a beautician to her children and grandchildren, braiding their hair, especially those box braids, and greasing them down with Vaseline -- she ensured they shined. You just knew Connie's kids by their shine. She also enjoyed playing cards -- Spades was the name of the game, Pokeno and the casino. She was a strong and brave woman who overcame many adversities and fought until her father, mother, sister, brother, aunties, and son camped around her and told her "It is time to come home, you're in too much pain. It is time for peace." Obedient to the call, with her head up and eyes open wide, she took her last breath to join her heavenly father at her eternal home on October 22, 2021.

In heaven, Connie Johnson joins her son, Jayquan O'dell Johnson, parents Leonard and Mamie Johnson, sister Linda Sanders, brother Garey Johnson, and other relatives with their angel wings. From heaven, Connie watches over her love, Kenneth Waluyn, children Dr. Fatima Alleyne (Lionel), Electa Thompson (Rashid), Bwerani Johnson and Kendricks Johnson, grandchildren Brianna, Ari, Micah, and Joshua Alleyne (Fatima), Zuri Thompson (Electa), Ahmere Francis and Chantel Princess Johnson (Jayquan), Temani Grey and Mariyah Ariel Johnson (Bwerani), brothers Roger, Timothy, and Ishmael Johnson, sisters Pauline Johnson and Darlene Coleman, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, distant relatives, and friends.
