Obituary

George Allen Bell was the second child and only son born to the late George Allen Bell and the late Edith Jayne Anderson in Beaufort, NC on May 26, 1936. Motsie Man began his education in Beaufort before moving to New York City with his grandmother (the late Bettie Fulford) and aunt (the late Rosetta Raglund). There he went through the public school system in Brooklyn and graduated from Metropolitan High School.

In 1957, he married the late Barbara Jackson. Together they had Rosetta Bell Harkley (the late Earl), Deborah Alleyne (Jerry), the late Allen Bell, George Bell, Latoya Bell, and Starmecca Bell. George also had a son, the late Darryl Buggs.

He was very popular and outgoing in and beyond his Greene Ave. and Grand Ave. neighborhood. This popularity spread as all who came to know George grew to love him. He was widely known as Candyman in the Farragut Housing project where he resided with his loving sister, Ella Bell Holloman. His sister called him Moose. He was Daddy, Grandpa George, and Grandpa to his children and grandchildren. To his nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephew he was affectionately called Uncle. An infectious smile, easy laugh, and mild manner met anyone who came in contact with George.

He made an impact wherever he was, as demonstrated by several decades working for a warehouse in New Jersey who did not want him to retire. When he finally left, they convinced him to stay a couple of times, he was greatly celebrated. George Bell was fun to be around, and people always flocked around him. He could be the life of the party and was an excellent dancer. George developed "insiders" with people that made them feel special, especially his family: ice cream, Tonk, piggyback rides, money, sneakers, nicknames, and plenty of laughs.

In the last month of his life, he announced to his Goddaughter, Germaine Walker, that he was tired and took his wings on the morning of April 18, 2025. George Allen Bell was blessed to see 88 years of life.

He leaves behind: his devoted sister; Ella Bell Holloman, his children; grandchildren - Shakeima, Shamell, and Shawanda LeGrand; Princess and Jerri Alleyne; Antoine and Carol Bell; Latoya Wallace and Markeisha Millin Jumper (Ryan); Shagary Williams; and Cashmere Faison and Storie Bell; twenty-one great grandchildren; a nephew Frank L. Holloman (Stephanie); five great nieces, one great nephew (who he claimed as grandkids!), and a host of extended family and friends. A nephew – the late Andre Holloman, and niece – the late Danielle McCray (the late Troy) predeceased Uncle.

As all remember and celebrate George's life, one of his favorite sayings lingers with those who loved him, "Don't worry about me, I'm alright."

Rest on Motsie Man, Moose, Daddy, Grandpa, Uncle, Candyman – you were loved and will be missed.
