James Ralph Downs Jr. was born on March 9, 1942 to Elizabeth Beasley and James Ralph Downs Sr. in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

James was raised on a farm around animals, including chickens, but never ate them as an adult. After being sprayed on by a skunk's as a youngster, he gained the moniker "Stinky" and tattooed it. James was a competent carpenter. He also served briefly in the Army.

James met the love of his life, Evelyn, who at that time according to societal norms was not meant to be together. They shared a total of 9 children. James did multiple occupations including construction at Bayride Roofing & Sliding and various duties at a Pet Shop on Broadway & Dekalb. He loved raising and maintaining fish, particularly Oscars.

James was a family man who was always eager to help with repairs and construction. James never wavered from being an excellent parent or grandfather. He adored his wife until she passed away. James lived his final days living life the way he wanted to. Being the writer of own his story. Late last year, he was diagnosed with cancer, which didn't prevent him from doing anything he set his mind on. He received grim news and all he wanted to do was leave the hospital. This strong-willed man strolled home being stubborn and thought it was the funniest thing ever. That's the kind of man we all loved & knew.

James was preceded in death by: his loving wife Evelyn, his mother Elizabeth, his father James Sr, his Daughters Hazel & Cindy, his great granddaughter Ivyona.

James leaves to cherish his memory: his daughters Brenda Mitchell, Shirley Smith, Vivian Downs; his sons Fredrick Smith, Richard Smith, Sean Downs and Sheldon Downs & A large host of grandchildren, great grands and great great grands.
