A Life of Strength, Love, and Legacy: Janie Wallace

Janie Wallace was born on April 4, 1949, in Baltimore, MD, to the late Janie Sanders and James Wallace. Affectionately known as Aunt Jane and Ms. Janice, she spent her early years in Baltimore, attending elementary school. During this time, she began visiting her grandmother and aunties in Brooklyn, NY—a place that would soon become home. At the age of eleven, her mother moved Janie and her four siblings to Brooklyn, where she continued her education in junior high and high school.

Even as a teenager, Janie was ambitious and driven. By sixteen, she was already working, embodying a relentless work ethic that would define her life. Often holding two jobs at a time, she believed in hard work, independence, and providing for those she loved. If there was one thing everyone knew about Janie, it was that she was a force to be reckoned with—a true workaholic in the best sense!

At seventeen, Janie married the late Robert Eason Jr., and soon after, they welcomed their first child, Robert. Four years later, she gave birth to her beloved daughter, Yolonda. Janie cherished her children, ensuring they always had the best of everything. She extended that same love and care to her niece, Candace, whom she helped raise alongside Robert and Yolonda. To Janie, family wasn't just important—it was everything.

Life on Classon Avenue in Brooklyn was a testament to the power of family. The big brownstone was always full of life—cookouts, family dinners, friends, guests, laughter, and love. Even in times of sorrow, Janie was the glue that held everyone together, stepping up as the family's rock and guiding them through anything that came their way.

In 1978, Janie began working at General Motors, where she dedicated over 20 years before retiring. Retirement, however, did not slow her down. She spent her years helping children, traveling, and continuing to be the backbone of her family. She had a passion for driving, vintage treasures, loved visiting thrift shops, her favorite color was red, and she could often be found enjoying her favorite westerns.

As the last surviving sibling of Ezell, Peggy, Jimmy, and Gregory, Janie naturally took on the role of Matriarch—a title she carried with strength, grace, and pride. She embodied the spirit of a strong Black woman, always thinking positively, no matter the circumstances. Her resilience, wisdom, and unwavering love inspired all who knew her to strive for greatness and live life to the fullest.

On March 14, 2025, in Baltimore, MD, she passed away due to heart failure. Though we lost a beloved mother, grandmother, auntie, and friend, her legacy will live on in the countless lives she touched.

Janie leaves behind her devoted son Robert, daughter Yolonda, nieces Candace, Tailisha, and Yasmina, nephews Dwayne, Darell, and Dale, grandsons Jaiquan and Khadir, her cousin Rosalind Davis, daughter-in-law Patroushka, stepdaughters Cepia and Cherobia, and host of family members in New York and Maryland, and an entire community of people who loved her dearly.

May God rest her mighty soul as she joins the ancestors. Janie's life was a testament of love, strength, and service, and she will be missed beyond measure. But today, we don't just mourn her—we celebrate her. Her spirit lives on in all of us, and her memory will be cherished forever.

Thank you all for being here to honor and uplift her beautiful life.
