Obituary

Miriam Eugene Thompson lived 93 glorious years and graduated from this earthly life to her reward on February 13 th, 2023.  She was born on March 25 th , 1929, in the Baltic, St Peter, Barbados to Goldbourne and Gertrude Briggs.  Miriam, affectionally called Eugene, was the 6 th of 12 siblings. During Miriam's youth, she attended Boscobelle Girls School.  In 1947, she married Irwin Thompson; the union birthed two children, Marva and Roger Thompson.

Eugene migrated to the United States on December 28, 1978, and resided in Hollis, Queens.  Marva and Roger graduated from Junior high school and the family moved to Brooklyn where they purchased their first US property.  Realizing that she needed more space, she decided to purchase a house in Rosedale, Queens in 2003.

For several years, Eugene worked as a Nurse's aide at Concord Nursing home and eventually retired from Cabs Nursing home due to her diagnosis of stomach cancer which she thankfully fought and recovered.  Working well into her 70's, she daily brought her infectious laugh and joy to the many patients under her care.

Eugene was simply fun and jovial and would always have nuggets of wisdom that she would impart to all of us.   Eugene would say: "Manners and Respect will carry you through this world".  "Cat luck ain't Dog luck" ( i.e. Don't be a follower).  One of Eugene's favorite sayings was "home drum beats first" and this was evident as Lucille, her younger sister, recounts a story from when she was 8 years old.   An extremely pushy woman wanted to retrieve spring water from a well hole. Lucille, being the smallest, was already dipping water from the well.  The pushy woman attempted to pull Lucille out of the hole so that she could get the water first.  Instinctively, Eugene grabbed the woman and stopped her from grabbing Lucille and proceeded to the ready position for fighting.   Although Eugene had a fighting spirit, her loving spirit exemplified who she was at her core.  She would often say, "I love my family" and "Family First."  Did I mention that she made a mean Pudding and Souse for the family at many of the family outings?

Eugene was a kind, devoted, selfless, strong, courageous, funny, wise, and determined lady, who would give endlessly of her resources and lend her smile to those who needed some sunshine on any given day.  Her vibrant personality would turn strangers into quick friends as she would invite them to be part of her family circle, by feeding them and sharing the gift of laughter with all who knew her. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, and friend.

Eugene is survived by her Son Roger Thompson, Grandson Terrell Thompson, Granddaughter Tiara Thompson, and Great Grandson Darnell Emmanuel Brown III. She leaves behind two surviving sisters Sheila Leacock and Lucille Bayley, brother-in-law Rev. George Bayley, and many nieces, nephews, friends, and numerous loved ones who were impacted by her love and prayers.

The Family of Eugene would like to give special thanks to those who cared for her in her final days.

Eugene loved God and will rest in eternal peace.
