Obituary

Steven Carl Braggs was born August 16, 1960 in Brooklyn, New York to Alexander, Sr. and Marie Braggs.  He was the fifth eldest of nine children.  His earliest years were spent with his parents and siblings in the Tompkins Houses or running alongside his brother Alex to his Aunt Emma house on Lexington Avenue.

Steven attended Elementary School PS 23, Junior High School 33 and Eastern District High School.  Steven served in the Army Reserves from 1978 to 1984, and after his deployment he received an Honorable Discharge.   Once home, Steven enrolled in culinary school and he also took carpentry and construction classes because he loved to cook and fix things.

Steven worked in many fields but he was most proud working as a NYC College Peace Officer together with his mother and eldest sister Arlene Braggs.  While working as a peace officer at New York City College of Technology he met Helen Reynolds.  Steven and Helen dated for years before marrying on August 16, 2007, and lived their lives together in Marcy Houses.

Steven was a very low-key kind of guy.  He was soft spoken like his father and sometimes proud like his brother Alex.  Steven was compassionate and was always lending a helping hand – he was definitely the man you could call when you needed something fixed.  While battling cancer, he still found time to help his friends and neighbors in Marcy Houses.  Steven also loved telling stories of his experiences, some real and some fabricated but great stories nonetheless.

After a hard battle, Steven passed away on October 28, 2021.  In his last days he talked about his Mother and Father and his brother Alex.  He is now in the presence of the creator with his beloved parents and his brother.  He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife Helen Reynolds; brother Eddy; sisters: Arlene, Regina, Virginia, Vera, Hazel and Susann; brother-in- laws: Michael, Gerald and Julio; and best friends:  Son and Lorenzo (Tony); and a host of Nieces, Nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
