Obituary

Mrs. Vivian Ann Mitchell Gordon, the daughter of the late Cleveland and Pearl Mitchell departed this life on Friday, October 20, 2023 at her residence; 411 Lafayette Avenue, Brooklyn NY. She was born on Augst 31, 1930 in the town of Darlington, Darlington County, South Carolina.

At a young age Vivian was baptized at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church where she served while living in South Carolina. When Vivian moved to Brooklyn she was baptized and became a member of the Evening Star Baptist Church, Brooklyn, New York.

Vivian graduated from Brockington High School, Timmonsville, South Carolina where she was active in sport, especially basketball which she loved. After graduation Vivian married Curtis Harrison Gordon and they were blessed with three children while they were living in SC. In 1955 Vivian and Curtis moved to Bronx, NY and lived there for seven years and had 3 more children including two twin girls. In 1962 Vivian, Curtis and the family moved to Brooklyn, NY.

Vivian went for post high school training and education and became employed by the state of New York as a Therapy Assistant for 26 years. Vivian received awards and certificates for her stellar and devoted service and retired in 1995.

Vivian loved sports and cooking and decorating and celebrating her children's achievements and birthdays and holidays. When she moved to Brooklyn she joined and played outfield on a community softball team for years. She thoroughly enjoyed watching sports and her favorite baseball team was the Yankees and her favorite basketball team was the Knicks. In later years she worked with the Tenant Association Tenant Patrol.

Vivian cooked big wonderfully nutritious and splendidly delicious meals for her family and friends up until this year when it became too difficult for her to do. Every year she did barbecues and cookouts. No birthday or holiday went uncelebrated to the fullest. She loved doing and serving others and seeing happy faces on others. Vivian always did the utmost and went above and beyond and would never let you down. Nothing seemed to be out of Vivian's reach. She was such a totally honest, trustworthy, loving, caring, charming, kind, thoughtful, generous and giving person.
